The dissolution of naturally weathered feldspar and quartz.

TLDR. It is proposed that some natural feldspars lose weakly bonded Al-OH to yield surfaces terminated by strongly bonded Si-OH (silanol), which might explain why some old feldspar-bearing rocks weather slower than predicted from brief laboratory dissolution. Expand. 21.

Feldspar Group Minerals | Types, Properties, Occurrence, Uses

Modified date: 23/04/2023. Feldspar is the name of a large organization of rock-forming silicate minerals that make up over 50% of Earth's crust. They are discovered in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks in all components of the sector. Feldspar minerals have very comparable structures, chemical compositions, and bodily properties.

Feldspar vs Quartz: What Are They, And What's The …

The difference is, that out of more than 200 recognized gemstones, at least 12 of those are variations of quartz, while only 4 of them are variations of feldspar. This is most likely due to the fact that quartz is a harder mineral than feldspar. If something can be scratched or broken more easily, it is considered less valuable.

Naturally weathered feldspar surfaces in the Navajo

Smectite coatings do not occur only on feldspar grains, but also on quartz, and Fe–Ti oxide grains (Fig. 4 b). Grain-mounted SEM samples clearly show the textural relationships of these feldspar coatings (Fig. 5). Feldspars are first covered with a layer of kaolin mineral, probably kaolinite, and then a layer of smectite (Fig. 5 a and b).
